Taking Stock and Coming Out at the Top!

Bianca Barrios and Yusuf Monin are two of this year's top finishers in the Stock Market Challenge! This amazing real-world challenge is run by our LSC-Online Investing Club. Bianca and Yusuf have shared their first-hand experiences with us:

In the Stock Market Challenge, you get a virtual $10,000, and it is based off the real-life New York Stock Market Challenge.

So, it deflects when stocks go up in real life and the platform we use will also go up and down. It's a great opportunity to learn about stocks, whether you are a beginner or advanced.

I personally learned a lot. It's also good if you're learning about history. I enjoyed it. I was very curious, I'm not a business major, but I was like, what are stocks? Everyone has a curiosity about what they are. I would say everyone should participate in the Stock Market Challenge. It's a perfect opportunity for y'all.

Last year I was taking only online classes, and I was looking at the clubs. I saw, oh, there's an investment club. I thought well, I'm not really good at math. I don't know what that is, and I was very curious.

I've read books and they would always be like, oh, they're a businessman, they're investing, but what is that?

I was very surprised to be a top finisher I did not expect that. I was like, no, that's not me. I didn't believe it, but I finally soaked it in!

There was a leaderboard and in the beginning, I had invested in Tesla, that skyrocketed. So, I was at the top for a long time.

After that, I made some interesting investing decisions, and many of them tanked, so that discouraged me for a while. But I feel like you shouldn't get easily discouraged.

It's all about how strong you are emotionally, and you can't let your emotions get the best of you, especially when you're investing in the stock market.

It definitely has given me a taste and I do think that I will carry on. I've learned a lot, and I want to learn more.

Yusuf Momin, Business Transfer Student

I have taken several online courses at Lone Star at the Online Campus. Some of them include Business Principles and Introduction to Communication.

I feel like I've really benefited from those courses, and I've been able to learn more about my future major, which is going to be Business.

My parents have been active traders for as long as I can remember. I grew up hearing conversations about investing strategies, earnings reports, things like that. I feel like this challenge has given me the opportunity to test my knowledge and apply my skills that I've learned over time.

I'm majoring in English because I would like to be a published author one day and to learn more about technical writing.

I hope to go to university to study law to become an attorney.

I'm going to carry on investing. The club gives a lot of useful resources. We had meetings with Charles Schwab, and they talked about stocks.

We've read books in the club as well. There's always useful information. You're not going into it blind. There's always someone to help you if you need.

Advice I would give. I would just say go for it!
