Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Embracing Traditions
Meet Elisha Lee, Treasurer for Phi Theta Kappa's LSC-Online chapter. Elisha is a dedicated high school student taking dual enrollment classes with LSC-Online and proudly holds the prestigious President's List Award.
I think Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a great opportunity for exceptional Asians and Pacific Americans to be recognized for their accomplishments.
Not only that, but it's a great opportunity for students like me to honor and appreciate the legacy of the people who worked hard before us and just to remember who we are.
The role models I admire the most are my parents. They have encouraged and supported me so much throughout this journey and I have learned a lot from them.
I honor my heritage by recognizing the expectations and lifestyle choices of my parents are influenced by Korean culture and ways of living.
In Korea, a single exam determines which school you go to, what job you will get, and what salary you will earn. There is less stakes for second generation Korean American students like me, but personally, learning about these Korean expectations have helped me better understand and relate.
Growing up in a Korean American family, and I'm sure this is true for other Asians as well, one of the most important things that helps me remember my heritage is the traditional Korean dishes that my mom prepares.Food is an important part of our cultural identity, and eating Korean food never fails to remind me of the amazing traditions and stories behind each dish.
Elisha is a keen STEM enthusiast, currently exploring various classes and academic paths at LSC-Online to find her perfect college major.
Dual enrolment classes are a really great opportunity for students like me to explore different fields, different paths, to find our strengths and hone in on them.Communicating with like Lone Star College is great because the academic advisors are very helpful and all the professors, I've had so far have been really easy to work with.
