AI-m for the Stars
Student Spotlight
Ramon Rodriguez, an Associate of Science student at Lone Star College majoring in Computer Science, has excelled in Programming Fundamentals I, II, III, and Computer Organization classes through LSC-Online. His dedication has earned him a semifinalist spot for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholarship, worth up to $55,000 per year.
My interest started with engineering, but diving deeper into it I got more interested in the programming aspect that went into the Arduino that led me to the computer science path.
I learned that with the Computer Science Degree, once you learn the fundamentals, you can basically create anything like a game, a web page, an application, all that sort of stuff.
Definitely my classes at LSC-Online, Programming Fundamentals I, II and III, have helped me solidify my choice of studying computer science, because of the support and all the knowledge I've gained through the classes.
I feel like my hard work has been validated, because it's a highly selective scholarship.
My motivation has gone up because I've started applying to different schools that I wouldn't have applied to, because I felt like I wasn't good enough. For my next step, I definitely want to go to Rice University. My future career aspiration is to become a Software Engineer or delve into AI and the AI machine learning part of computer science.
My advice to other students would be go, join clubs, organizations, everything that you can do and that you find interesting, with people who genuinely care for you and are like-minded like you.So y'all can help inform. So y'all can network and form meaningful friendships and don't let your nerves and anxiety stop you from applying to something.
Just because you don't feel like you're good enough, that doesn't mean that you are not. So, apply for stuff!
Ramon's success doesn't end there, he previously participated in the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program, designed to enhance STEM skills for future careers.
He was selected from over 2,000 students nationwide to take part, going on to complete Missions 1 and 2.
I found out about the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholas program, (NCAS) through my LSC-Online Professor, Dr. Javaher at the AI and Computer Science Club.
I did get a certificate saying that I'm an NCAS alumni. So, moving forward if I apply to a NASA internship, I have that on my resume and NASA funds your internship.
With the AI and Computer Science Club, you surround yourself with like-minded people, so you're always helping each other.
For me my communication skills really went up, because I was communicating with the members.I'm also part of the Global Scholars program, so I have that community too. Where I've improved my cultural competency, adaptability and open-mindedness.
