Women's History Month
Celebrating Contributions
Women's History Month is a reminder of the extraordinary impact women have made and continue to make to our society. To celebrate and reflect on this Maryssa Johnson, LSC-Online Computer Science major and Women In STEM Club President has shared her experiences:
Women in History Month means to me a time to celebrate the contribution of women who have paved the way in various fields.
It's an opportunity to recognize their achievements, inspire future generations, and continue advocating for gender equality in a male dominated space.
I started my journey by earning a coding certificate to explore the field and coding quickly sparked my interest.
This led me to pursue my degree at Lone Star where I deepened my understanding and skills in the field.
As president of the Women in STEM Club, my role is to create a supportive community for women pursuing STEM fields.
My goal is to inspire and empower members by providing opportunities to connect, learn, and grow in the field where representation matters. It has been an honor to help start and lead my community and I hope this club continues to grow and empower future students to pursue their passion and STEM.
Many women have inspired me, but Doctor Nina Javaher, who was my Computer Science Professor and also the advisor of the Women in STEM club has greatly impacted my journey.
She encouraged me to step into a leadership role, shaping my confidence and passion for supporting others in the field.
I chose the online program for its flexibility, which allows me to balance my coursework and extracurricular activities and professional opportunities.
Being an online student has challenged my ability to stay disciplined and engaged, but has also taught me self-motivation. I hope to take those skills into whichever university I get into. I want to pursue a career in computer science, focusing on AI ethics and policy. Overall, my goal would be to help create policies to ensure AI is used safely, fairly, and responsibly.
My advice to young women who wish to pursue a degree in STEM would be don't be afraid to take up space. Your voice and ideas matter. Seek mentorship, build a strong support network, take advantage of every opportunity to grow your skills, and most importantly, stay curious and resilient.
