Black History Month
Inspiring the Next Generation
Alyssa Perry Davis is a dedicated Computer Science student in her third semester at LSC-Online. She has shared how learning about black history has shaped her identity in a hugely impactful way.
Black History month means to me more than learning about history. It is the creativity, the awesomeness, the smarts of a lot of blacks from all over the world that have invented so many things and have paved a way for every single last person here today.
What I would like people to know and understand for when celebrating black history, is that black history is not just black history. They have helped pave the way just like every other person in history has helped pave the way to bring us all to where we are today. Our history is part of everybody else's history, and we are all one. We have, they have, made a huge impact for everybody to love one another, and to show that we are all one.
I have a few black women from history who inspire me.Women such as Dorothy Vaughan and Annie Easley. They are women in history who were mathematicians and engineers working in NASA. That is one of my biggest things! They have been an inspiration to me. I've got to learn about them; to see how hard it was for them then, and how they got to where they are now. My more present has been, of course, Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris, due to them being women on a big stage in the US.
A passion for computer science, coding and robotics began for Alyssa in high school, where she built and programmed robots for competitions. This interest led her to pursue computer science in college, with a focus on robotics. As a military spouse, the flexibility of the LSC-Online program has been essential for her.
I really want to work at NASA in their engineering and robotics field, to be able to create robots to help people out in space.
I really want to go for that more than anything. I have a little robot kit here that I play and build with, teaching my little daughter how to play and build robots.
"I do hope I get a chance to either make history myself or help my kids. They want to be a part of making history. Help them to become women and make some type of history themselves.
Especially in the field of Robotics and STEM. Because there aren't a lot of women in STEM, but we are starting to grow in that field. I would love to be one of the ones to make history with that. That would be awesome!"
