Beautiful Book of Bones
Student Spotlight
Each year, Associate of Science students at LSC-Online have the opportunity to participate in an assignment called the Beautiful Book of Bones (BBB) as part of Dr. Asitha Silva's Anatomy class. In this assignment, students draw microanatomical details of selected structures, using this technique to better understand challenging concepts. This year's BBB winner, Tara Spencer, has shared her amazing drawings with us.
I did win the Beautiful Book of Bones assignment! And I'm like, OK, I can do this. I felt like I was able to become a doctor. That is my plan. My plan is premed and then med. This is my first year of college. It was really cool to see that I can get somewhere!
The first topic here is the anatomy of compact and spongy bone, which is a type of bone you have in you. I did a microscopic view.
Then I went over the endochondral ossification process, which is basically the growing of a bone from a baby to an adult.I did some cutaway diagrams of the bone and the inner workings of the bone itself. I was learning all while drawing, which made me understand it 100 times better. It was a great opportunity.
I chose to do hand drawings on my iPad, which I have never done before this assignment. So, a lot of hours went into figuring out my medium. I probably spent about 16 hours drawing my assignment.
I did a cutaway diagram of a flat bone, which is like one you would see on the top of your skull and then a microscopic view of the type of spongy bone in the flat bone.
There's a lot of specialties out there and I have a feeling I'm going to fall in love with one after I start doing rotations. But I am interested in becoming a medical examiner. So autopsies and causes of death.
I drew a diagram of synovial joint. An example of that is where your knee meets and then there's fluid in there.Lastly, I drew a diagram of muscular attachment to the posterior and anterior view of a scapula, the shoulder blade.
I'm not a super creative person. So this allowed me to take that part of my brain and connect it to the science part. Now the information is in my long-term brain! After I did these diagrams, my studying method from there on out was to make small diagrams of things I didn't understand. This really allowed me to develop a new way of studying. It has been completely supportive of definitely my biology grade, that's for sure!
